Platelet Rich Plasma

At The City of Orange Physical Medicine Group, we are proud to offer Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) as a treatment for a variety of injuries. If you’ve never heard of PRP, you’re not alone.

PRP hasn’t yet become a mainstream treatment option, but we expect that to change in the coming years. However, PRP has earned media attention because famous athletes such as Tiger Woods and Rafael Nadal have credited PRP for helping them recover from injuries more effectively.

In fact, a number of athletes have stated that PRP allowed them to return to competition from an injury quicker than traditional treatment methods. If you’re suffering from nagging injuries that are causing chronic pain, PRP might be the solution you need.

What is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)?

Our blood is comprised of plasma (the liquid part), red cells, white cells, and platelets. Each component of blood serves a specific function – platelets are primarily responsible for clotting blood, but they also contain hundreds of proteins called growth factors that assist in the healing of injuries.

As the name suggests, PRP is blood plasma with a significantly higher concentration of platelets than what is normally found in blood. PRP is typically 5 to 10 times more concentrated than normal blood.

With a higher concentration of platelets, PRP has a greater ability to heal injuries.

How Does PRP Work?

PRP treatment starts with a practitioner drawing blood from the patient and placing that blood in a centrifuge to separate the platelets from other blood cells. Once the platelets have been separated, they are added to the remaining blood to increase the concentration of platelets in that blood – creating Platelet-Rich Plasma.

The PRP is then injected into the injury site to promote enhanced healing in and around the injury.

The most common PRP applications are:

  • 1. PRP is carefully injected into the injured area. For example, with Achilles tendonitis, a condition often seen in runners and tennis players, the heel cord can become swollen, inflamed, and painful. PRP (and possibly local anesthetic) can be injected directly into the inflamed area.
  • 2. PRP is used to improve healing during surgery for some injuries. For example, an athlete who has a completely torn heel cord will likely require surgery to repair the tendon. Healing of the torn tendon can be improved by treating the injured area with PRP during the actual surgery.

We provide PRP for acute and chronic conditions, as well as for post-surgery application.

What Conditions Are Treated With PRP?

Below are some of the common issues that PRP treatment is used for:

  • Knee Pain – Patellar tendonitis, a quadriceps muscle injury, or a ligament sprain or tear
  • Hip Pain – Piriformis syndrome, trochanteric bursitis, ischial bursitis, pubic symphysis pain, or sacroiliac joint pain
  • Should and Arm Pain – Rotator cuff tendonitis, partial tears, joint pain and arthritis, or Golfer’s elbow
  • Lower leg, Ankle, and Foot Pain – Plantar fasciitis, shin splints, ankle sprains, achilles tendonitis, and partial tears
